Climate and Economy [ 5-Feb-26 9:32am ]

Huge thanks to my February sponsor, John Rember, author of the three-book series Journal of the Plague Years, a psychic survival guide for humanity's looming date with destiny, shaped by his experiences living through the pandemic in his native Idaho. Industry bigger than all but seven world economies, and accounts for more than third of China's economic growth

China's clean energy industries drove more than 90% of the country's investment growth last year, making the sectors bigger than all but seven of the world's economies, a new analysis has shown.

For the second time in three years, the report showed the manufacture, installation and export of batteries, electric cars, solar, wind and related technologies accounted for more than a third of China's economic growth.

At a party event in a school hall in Lewisham, people told me how disillusionment with Labour has led to this moment

Castletown Bay, Isle of Man: The smell is unpleasant, but these slimy mounds are full of flies, molluscs and sand hoppers - all vital winter food

My British Trust for Ornithology wetland bird survey includes patrolling a storm beach, which, at this time of year, has huge piles of rotting wrack thrown up by the gales. They're made up of hand-like fronds of laminaria, bladderwrack with its buoyant bubble vesicles, sugar kelp and the long "washing line" strands of non-native sargassum seaweed that arrived from Japan on Pacific oysters and ships' hulls in recent years.

These slimy, smelly heaps are generally unpopular with passersby - some even call for their removal - but for wildlife they are a food source of the highest quality.

The best cameras for 2026 [ 05-Feb-26 8:00am ]

Cameras had an interesting year in 2025, with the launch of some long-delayed models like Sony's 61MP RX1III, wholly original cameras (the Fujifilm X Half and Sigma BF) and much anticipated updates like the Sony A7 V and Canon R6 III. All told, there were 27 new cameras launched last year that joined the 20 new models on the market from 2024.

Those ranged from compacts to mirrorless to very high-end models, with every price range included. The question is, which one is right for the type of videography or photography you do? Whether you're an aspiring action or wildlife photographer, an extreme sports junkie or a content creator, we'll help you find the perfect camera to match your budget and requirements.

Best cameras for 2026 Best mirrorless cameras

Mirrorless is the largest camera category in terms of models available, so it's the best way to go if you're looking for something with the most advanced features. Canon and Nikon recently announced they're discontinuing development of new DSLRs, simply because most of the advantages of that category are gone, as I detailed in a video. The biggest selling feature of a mirrorless camera is the ability to change lenses depending on the type of shooting you want to do.

Best action camera or gimbal camera

The most important features to look for in an action cam are image quality, stabilization and battery life. GoPro has easily been beating all rivals recently in all those areas, but DJI has taken a lot of its business with the Osmo Pocket 3 gimbal camera.

Best compact camera

This category has fewer cameras than it did even a few years ago and many models are older, as manufacturers focus instead on mirrorless models. However, I'm still a big believer in compact cameras. They're a noticeable step up from smartphones quality-wise, and a lot of people will take a compact traveling or to events when they'd never bother with the hassle of a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Compacts largely have type 1-inch sensors, but a few offer larger options, particularly Fujifilm's XF-100V. Another popular model, Sony's XV-1, is primarily aimed at content creators looking to step up. In any case, desirable qualities include image quality, a fast lens, relatively long zoom, flip-out display, good battery life, a high quality EVF, decent video and good pocketability.

What to consider before choosing a camera

Smartphones might get better for video and photos every year, full cameras still have an edge in many ways. The larger sensors in mirrorless cameras let more light in, and you have a wide choice of lenses with far superior optics. Dedicated cameras are also faster for shooting things like sports or wildlife, offer superior video for content creators and create more professional results.

Sensor size

There are a few key things to consider to get the most out of a camera. The first is sensor size: in general, the larger the sensor, the better (and usually more expensive) the camera.

Full frame is the largest sensor size for mainstream cameras, and it's available on models like the new Panasonic S9, the Nikon Z III and Canon EOS R5 II. At a size equivalent to 35mm film (36 x 24mm), it offers the best performance in terms of image quality, low-light capability and depth of field. But it's also very expensive and finicky. While bokeh looks incredible at an aperture of f/1.4, the depth of field is so razor thin that your subject's eyebrow might be in focus but not their eye. This can also make shooting video difficult.

The next size category is APS-C (around 23.5 x 15.6mm for most models and 22.2 x 14.8mm for Canon), offered on Fujifilm's X Series lineup, the Canon R10, the Sony ZV-E10 II and the Nikon Z50. It's cheaper than full frame, both for the camera body and lenses, but still brings most of the advantages like decent bokeh, high ISOs for low-light shooting and relatively high resolution. With a sensor size the same as movie cameras, it's ideal for shooting video, and it's easier to hold focus than with full-frame cameras.

Micro Four Thirds (17.3 x 13mm), a format shared by Panasonic and Olympus, is the next step down in sensor size. It offers less bokeh and light-gathering capability than APS-C and full frame, but allows for smaller and lighter cameras and lenses. For video, you can still get reasonably tight depth of field with good prime lenses, but focus is easier to control.

The other common sensor size is Type 1 (1 inch), which is actually smaller than one inch at 12.7 x 9.5mm. That's used mostly by compact models like Sony's ZV-1 vlogging camera. Finally, action cameras like the GoPro Hero 11 and DJI's Osmo 3 have even smaller sensors (1/1.9 and 1/1.7 inches, respectively).

Autofocus

For photographers, another key factor is autofocus (AF) speed and accuracy. Most modern mirrorless cameras have hybrid phase-detect AF systems that allow for rapid focus and fast burst speeds. The majority also offer AI features like eye-detect AF for people and animals, which locks in on the subject's eyes, face or body to keep them in focus. However, some models are faster and more reactive than others.

Displays

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) and rear display are also crucial. The best models have the sharpest and brightest EVFs that help you judge a shot before taking it. For things like street photography, it's best to have as bright and sharp a rear display as possible, so it's easy to see your subject and check focus in all manner of lighting conditions. You may also want a screen that flips out rather than just tilting, too.

Lenses

DSLRs and mirrorless cameras let you change lenses, but you're stuck with what's built into a compact camera. While that's great for portability, a single lens means you're going to sacrifice something along the way. The Fujifilm X100V, for instance, has a fast but fixed 35mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens and no zoom. The Sony RX100 V has a 24-70mm zoom, but it's slower at the telephoto end (f/2.8) and less sharp than a fixed focal (prime) lens.

When choosing a lens for a mirrorless camera, you'll need to consider the focal or zoom length, along with the minimum aperture. Smaller numbers like f/1.4 for a prime lens or f/2.8 for a zoom are best, as they let you work in darker environments and maximize background blur to isolate your subject. However, those lenses are more complex and thus more expensive.

Video recording

When it comes to video, there are other factors to consider. Some cameras combine or skip over pixels (line skipping or pixel binning) for video recording, which is not ideal because it can reduce sharpness. Better cameras tend to read out the entire sensor and then "downsample" to improve video sharpness (camera manufacturers don't often say if video is pixel binned, but will say if it's downsampled). Another important factor is sensor speed, as slower sensors tend to have more rolling shutter that can create a "jello" effect that skews video.

In addition, how's the battery life? How do you like the handling and feel? How long can you shoot before the camera heats up or stops? Does it support 10-bit HDR video? Is there a microphone and/or a headphone jack? (If you record a lot of interviews, it's preferable to have both.) How's the video autofocus? All of these things play a part in your decision.

2026 Sepang MotoGP Test Day 3 FP6 4pm Times: Alex Marquez Fastest As Riders Work On Race Rhythm

The final session of the Sepang MotoGP test has been dedicated to race simulations and long runs. Alex Marquez leads a Ducati top three, ahead of the two Ducati Lenovos of Marc Marquez and Pecco Bagnaia. All three did race simulations, with Alex Marquez quickest, Pecco Bagnaia second fastest, and Marc Marquez third. Pedro Acosta was fourth fastest overall, and his race simulation was a fraction slower than that of Marc Marquez.

The first spots of rain have been spotted around the track, threatening to bring proceedings to an early close.

LONDON A-Z
I'm three letters into my alphabetical romp through London's unsung suburbs and already suffering from buyer's remorse. Yes I've picked three intriguing locations so far, but just think where I could have gone instead.

For A I considered Albany Park but decided against because I'm trying, where possible, to avoid places with stations. I could have blogged interestingly about Addiscombe or Addington, but both have tram stops which makes them too well known. I was tempted by Arkley but I'd blogged its semi-visible windmill and water tower before. I could have run with Ardleigh Green but wasn't sure I could get enough words out of it. I definitely considered Aperfield but it's debatable where it stops being Biggin Hill. In the end I plumped for Aldborough Hatch and I'm pretty content with that choice. But I very very nearly went to Aldersbrook because it's the epitome of a large off-the-radar settlement.

A is for Aldersbrook
About 5000 people live in Aldersbrook, a Redbridge suburb that's easy to define because it's entirely surrounded by grassland. To the south are Wanstead Flats, to the north is Wanstead Park and to the east is the River Roding, or rather a smaller stream with a name you can probably guess. The Alders Brook is a mile-long braid of the Roding, a thinner wigglier tributary that rejoins the main river near Ilford Bridge. On the neighbouring meadows a manor house was well established in Tudor times, then demolished to make way for Aldersbrook Farm, then sold off to the City of London who planned to build an enormous cemetery instead. That's still here and still enormous, also an amazing place to walk around, and its gothic gates are the first thing you see if approaching Aldersbrook from Manor Park.
If this had been a proper A-Z post I'd have gone into more detail about the backhistory, but it isn't so let's move on.

The Aldersbrook estate was built between 1899 and 1910 and has barely expanded since, so rigidly have the City of London protected the integrity of Wanstead Flats. The original landowner decreed that all the housing be of "villa-style", thus to walk around the estate today is to experience the peak of Edwardian suburbia, a web of splendid avenues where every home is bedecked with intricate flourishes. The luckiest residents still have geometrical ceramic pathways leading to a fanlit door, also recessed porches with decorative tiling to dado level, also moulded plasterwork around decorative sash windows. But it's the porches that stand out most, many topped with fiddly carved timber or ornate cast iron, and I'm sorry I can only show you two in my photos because by no means all the outdoor flourishes look like this.
To see more there's always Streetview, but easier just to scan through the Conservation Area design guide instead.

Few public facilities were provided for residents of Aldersbrook, and definitely not a pub, although this was the era when places of worship were still deemed important so even the Baptist church has a significant spire. A single parade of shops exists in the southeast corner which until recently offered a chippie, off-licence, salon and various cemetery hangers-on. I was shocked to see they've all been decanted in favour of two knocked-through units, one of which opened as a Tesco Express before Christmas while the other remains unlet. Aldersbrook Library is a lowly hut, supposedly once the old farm's dairy, and only intermittently-open. But if it's a sit-down coffee you seek then your sole option appears to be the legendary Wanstead Tea Hut beside the lake in the park, although they don't bother in bad weather and Tesco's Costa machine isn't quite the same.
There's also a Greggs at the Esso garage (where the original farm used to be), but that's no premier coffee experience either.

It's not all Edwardian delight round here, and the further west you go the more modern flats appear. East Ham council used to run a large children's home behind Woodlands Avenue and when that closed the site was redeveloped as three-storey flats, screamingly Sixties in design. Considerable Eighties filler lies behind, these the only residents with their own designated parking spaces. And at Blake Hall Crescent is the famous Aldersbrook Lawn Tennis Club, a long sliver of all-weather courts not yet back in full operation. You can watch the tennis action from the three bus routes that skirt Aldersbrook, but no public transport ventures into the Edwardian interior so you may never have seen how appealingly off-piste it is You lucky residents, you have a little treasure here.
But I didn't write about Aldersbrook, I wrote about Aldborough Hatch, so that was merely the potted version.

There was an even greater embarrassment of riches for B. The split-level oddity that is Belvedere. The ancient extremity of Bedfont. The inner hoods of Brook Green and Brompton. One of the two vastly-different Belmonts. The near Dartford-ness of Barnes Cray. The A40-adjacent Brentham Garden Suburb. The teensy hamlet of Berry's Green. In the end I went for the Bexley trio of Blackfen, Blendon and Bridgen. But I was also seriously tempted to take you to the isolated highlands of Enfield and the outlier that is Botany Bay...

B is for Botany Bay
If London had a sensible northern border that wasn't the M25, Botany Bay would be in Hertfordshire. It sits adrift on a high road called the Ridgeway with a river valley on each side, roughly halfway between Potters Bar and Enfield. It's so remote that its name does indeed come from the Australian penal colony at Botany Bay, its location amid the Elizabethan hunting ground of Enfield Chase deemed notably inaccessible. As a minor hamlet it still only has about 200 residents strung out in very mixed housing along the main road. Some live in old brick cottages, others in bungalows, villas, semis and bespoke detacheds, all added as and when. There's even a smart rustic cul-de-sac that could have been the first flourishings of broader development but plainly wasn't, this still a tiny island in a sea of Green Belt.

Pubs: 1. The Robin Hood has been here since 1904, a large faux-timbered roadside inn with a car park to match. Food is very high on the agenda, the twin boards out front currently promoting Sunday roasts and a special Valentine's experience featuring Jamie Cullis from 8pm. The village highspot, it would seem.
Shops: 1. But not a convenience store, instead the farm shop at Botany Bay Farm ('where London meets the country™'). I confess the large sign saying HAND MADE SAUSAGES AND LOCALLY PRODUCED HAM AND BACON properly tempted me, also the jar of sparkly rainbow drops by the till, but villagers and drive-by patrons may better appreciate the range of breads, preserves, cakes and juices.
Alpaca Experiences: 1. Botany Bay Farm diversified into alpacas in 2024, its herd of ten tame trotters available for 40 minute trekking sessions most weekends. Rest assured that only the farm's Longhorn cattle end up in the shop as meat, the alpacas are instead shorn to produce knitted snoods, gloves and beanies.

Cricket Clubs: 1. Botany Bay's cricket club was founded in 1899 and was a founder member of the Middlesex League. To my eye the pitch looks sloping, which is perhaps why nobody scored a century here until 1937.
Rugby Clubs, Petanque Clubs, Darts teams and MG Owners Clubs: 1 of each, all based at the cricket club.
Jazz nights: 2. Trad on Tuesdays and modern on Thursdays, again at the cricket club who certainly know how to diversify. Tonight it's Liane Caroll, 'the phenomenal pianist and vocalist' (and a regular at Ronnie Scott's) who'll be performing over supper.
Bus routes: 1. The 313 provides a regular 20 minute service to towns with proper shops and services, and also offers an amazing view of undulating rural fields from its upper deck (but only if you come on a day when it isn't raining).

As for the letter C I went with Cranford but could have gone with Carterhatch, Chase Cross, Chelsfield, Childs Hill, Clayhall, Coldblow, Colham Green, Coney Hall, Coombe, Corbets Tay or Cudham, a truly bumper selection of outliers. Think you know London? There's always so much more to discover and I've got a long way to go yet.

ARE WE LIVING IN A TRANCE OF SOME SORT? WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING BEFORE OUR EYES BUT WE JUST CANNOT CARE?

EPSTEIN FILES IN USA WASN'T ENOUGH, 3.5 MILLION PAGES WITH NEGLIGIBLE INVESTIGATION WASN'T ENOUGH. ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT IT. IT DOESN'T EVEN END THERE.

NEW DELHI, CAPITAL OF INDIA, WHERE 24000 PEOPLE WENT MISSING IN 2025 AND 800+ PEOPLE WENT MISSING IN THE FIRST 15 DAYS OF 2025 ALONE??? WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT IT?

I EVEN TRIED TELLING MY PALS ABOUT IT BECAUSE SOMEONE REALLY CLOSE TO ONE OF MY CLOSEST PALS STAYS THERE BUT EVERYONE JUST BRUSHES IT OFF??

WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR EVEN? WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT WENT MISSING BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T "OUR PEOPLE"? WHY DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT IF IT'S HAPPENING TO THEM TODAY SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU TOO! IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR FAMILY AS WELL, AND I HOPE NOT BUT WHEN THE DAY COMES EVERYONE FEEL AS HOPELESS AS I'M FEELING RN THINKING ABOUT THEM.

FOR ONE MINUTE OF YOUR LIFE PLEASE TRY IMAGINING THE SISTER/BROTHER WHO YOU'VE SPENT YOUR WHOLE LIFE WITH SUDDENLY GONE WITHOUT A TRACE WITH NEITHER YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVING ANY IDEA WHAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH OR IF THEY ARE EVEN ALIVE? COULD YOU LIVE A DAY LIKE THAT? WHAT WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENED AND PEOPLE PAID NO HEED TO IT?? WHO WOULD YOU GO TO???

I REPEAT DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN TO YOU. RAPE, KIDNAPPING, MURDERS, TRAFFICKING EVERYTHING BOTHERS USSSS AND NOTTTT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SITTING AT THE TOP OF THE GAME. THERE'S NO NECESSITY OF THEM TAKING ACTIONS.

BUT IF WE COLLECTIVELY DON'T RAISE OUR VOICES, WE WILL BE THE ONE TO SUFFER, NOONE ELSE BUT WE,

TALK ABOUT IT ONCE AND YOU'LL REALISE WE ARE REALLY LIVING IN A TRANCE. PLEASE START CARING OR THE DAY YOU START CRYING ISN'T FAR AWAY. THIS HELPLESSNESS WILL NEVER TRULY VANISH BUT IT CAN SURE AS HELL LESSEN A BIT IF THE VICTIMS FEEL A BIT HEARD.

if we don't do it now, we'll jus end up as mere numbers and statistics on the charts, just an inconvenience to the people who are so grown to treat those numbers as just numbers and not individuals who were snatched off the opportunity of life.

TL;DR:- The number you see on the screens be it the Epstein files, the people missing, the number of murders, the number of rape victims, they are not just numbers, those are real people and EVERY life counts.

Tongues In My Head

Intense but beguiling, former Marc Almond and Einstürzende Neubauten collaborator conjures sensual rituals and half-dirges

Annie Hogan is something of a quiet icon of goth and post-punk. A longtime friend of Marc Almond, she put on early Soft Cell shows and played with his dark cabaret side-project Marc and the Mambas. She appears on Barry Adamson's seminal Moss Side Story and has worked with Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, and several members of Einstürzende Neubauten. She's also been releasing evocative solo music since the late 1980s, the latest of which, the six track album Tongues In My Head, strikes an elegant balance of light and shade.

It's darkly funny, in a way, to recall a racist trope that gets trotted out about immigration all the time: immigrants bring disease into the country. That in itself isn't funny, obviously. The funny part is that it seems like we're proving the opposite to be true under the Trump administration. As the measles outbreak in America continues to rage, immigration detention camps are starting to feel the effects.

Earlier this week reports indicated the Dilley detention center in Texas was going on a sort of soft lockdown due to confirmed cases of measles among those detained.

"ICE Health Services Corps immediately took steps to quarantine and control further spread and infection, ceasing all movement within the facility and quarantining all individuals suspected of making contact with the infected," McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said medical officials were monitoring detainees and taking "appropriate and active steps to prevent further infection."

"All detainees are being provided with proper medical care," she added.

We are definitely in "prove it" territory when it comes to this administration and immigration questions. That's all the more so if the government, as they've done via other excuses in the past, limits or restrains entry to these facilities from other lawmakers who want to check DHS' homework and uses the measles outbreak as the reason for it.

Neha Desai, a lawyer for the California-based National Center of Youth Law, which represents children in U.S. immigration custody, said she hopes the measles infections at Dilley are not used to "unnecessarily" prevent lawmakers and attorneys from inspecting the detention center in the near future, citing broader concerns about the facility.

"In the meantime, we are deeply concerned for the physical and the mental health of every family detained at Dilley," Desai said. "It is important to remember that no family needs to be detained — this is a choice that the administration is making."

It's also worth remembering that the spread of disease is a recurring feature in the concentration camp industry. Deaths from disease as well. And, unlike the trope mentioned above, these are infections immigrants are getting from America, not bringing to her soil.

And it's not just one detention camp, either. The Florence Detention Center in Arizona is also dealing with measles infections.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reports one ICE detainee in the Florence Detention Center in Pinal County tested positive for measles on Jan. 21.

Two more measles cases have recently been confirmed among people who are also in federal custody in the county, according to a spokesperson for the Pinal County Public Health Services District. But the spokesperson did not provide details about which facility the other two infected individuals are in, or whether any of the three cases in the county are linked.

As Desai said in the quote above, this is a choice. Or, rather, a series of choices. It's a choice made by Trump and his minions to carry out this inhumane, disorganized, haphazard campaign of brutality on illegal immigrants. This could have gone many ways, but Trump chose cruelty on purpose. It's a choice to put RFK Jr. in charge of America's health and then watch idly, leaning back with folded arms, as the country experiences the worst measles outbreak in decades over the past 13 months. It's a choice to not pivot on any of the above.

And it's a choice to leave South Carolina swinging in the wind as the measles outbreak there will no doubt continue to spread to the rest of the country.

State health officials are reporting 29 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 876. The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) said there are currently 354 people in quarantine and 22 in isolation. The latest end of quarantine for these cases is Feb. 24.

Those numbers will continue to rise, but they are already breathtaking. 2025 saw a measles infection count nationwide of 2,267. South Carolina has generated nearly 40% of that total in one month in one state. 18 states have already had measles infections within their borders this year. The 2026 totals are going to make 2025 look like peanuts.

And it could potentially be hardest on the human beings who are shoved like sardines into these immigrant detention camps. Diseases like the measles will spread incredibly fast there. And, despite DHS' claims to the contrary, I just can't find it in me to believe that this administration is going to put a priority on detainee's health.

Aerial view of Hemsby showing how close many homes are to the crumbling cliffs.

MPs and councillors have been warned to stop "selling false promises" of new sea defences to coastal villages already losing homes to the sea, as the focus shifts towards compensation for those affected.

Daniel Candon, Conservative cabinet member for economic growth at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said politicians had attempted to win votes by pledging new coastal protection for Hemsby, despite expert advice that such defences are unlikely to materialise.

Speaking at a council meeting on Thursday, he said villagers were now being forced to confront "hard truths". Not only are new defences improbable, experts have also warned that they would be ineffective and could worsen erosion elsewhere along the coast. Councillors unanimously backed efforts to secure some form of compensation, potentially through a national insurance-style scheme, for people living in around 9,000 properties considered at risk.

'Absolutely devastating'

Erosion at Hemsby has accelerated dramatically. In one night alone along a stretch of the cliffs, around 10 metres of land was lost, and 26 homes have since been demolished. The councillors claimed the rapid loss was not driven by recent storms but by natural tidal processes.

Carl Smith, Conservative leader of the council, described the situation as "absolutely devastating" for residents. He also expressed anger that, despite the pace of erosion over the past year, officials from the Environment Agency had not visited the village. The council is now calling for a national strategy for coastal communities, rather than a series of pilot schemes that have failed to deliver long-term support.

"This is not just about Hemsby," Mr Smith said. "People affected by coastal change often don't know who to turn to for help. Without structural change, residents will suffer immeasurably from the stress and emotional and financial burden."

James Bensly, councillor for Hemsby and cabinet member for coastal management, said he could not accept a system that allowed people to "lose everything through no fault of their own". Trevor Wainwright, leader of the Labour group, also criticised the Environment Agency for failing to move quickly enough to meet the scale of the challenge.

Mr Smith is now writing to the prime minister to urge greater support for communities affected by erosion.

When erosion reaches the dead Aerial views of Happisburgh in 2006 and 2023 showing housing that was previously several hundred metres from the cliff edge are now only tens of metres away.Aerial views of Happisburgh show the extent of coastal erosion over the last 17 years. Images by Mike Page.

Coastal erosion in north Norfolk is not only threatening homes. 15 miles along the coast in Happisburgh, families are facing the distressing prospect that the remains of loved ones will need to be exhumed to prevent them falling into the sea.

Hundreds of people will be affected as erosion advances towards the churchyard at St Mary the Virgin, located around 80 metres from the cliffs. Two further burial sites in Trimingham and Mundesley are also at risk.

The issue was highlighted following an investigation by Coastwise, a scheme run by North Norfolk District Council, which concluded that new sea defences would not be "technically, environmentally or economically feasible".

Frank Mason, 69, whose parents are buried at the site, said he was living in "limbo". He wants a clear plan in place while he is still alive. David Wright, 66, regularly visits the grave of his son, who died from bone cancer aged 17, and fears the emotional toll of exhumation on his family.

David Wright, next to his son's grave. The sea is visible over his shoulder.David Wright. Image by LDRS.

Both men said the lack of clear timescales was compounding their distress. Updated Environment Agency projections suggest the cemetery could be at serious risk within 25 years, though officials warn major storms could accelerate this significantly.

Rob Goodliffe, the council's coastal transition manager, said a range of options were being considered, but any decision would require agreement with the church and local residents. The cost of exhuming thousands of remains could run into millions of pounds, and complex legal issues risk delaying action.

Selling paradise on borrowed time

Despite the known risks, vulnerable coastal land continues to be sold - legally, but controversially.

Phil Merry and his partner Amy Parkinson, from Nottingham, paid £30,000 for a plot of land near Trimingham, hoping to live in a caravan and run a small campsite. Only later did they realise the land sits on one of Europe's fastest eroding coastlines and is unlikely ever to receive planning permission.

The plot in Trimmingham is very close to the cliff edge.Image by Phil Merry.

The plot lies around 50 metres from the cliff edge. Local councillor Angie Fitch-Tillet told Mr Merry the land was "only good for grazing goats". While she later admitted she had been "a little blunt", she said she wanted to be realistic.

"There is no requirement for estate agents to warn buyers that land is in a coastal erosion risk zone," she said. "Unless people find out beforehand, they are stuck."

Mr Merry has since put the land back on the market, doubting he will recover his costs. While he does not blame the estate agent, he has accused council officials of showing little sympathy.

The issue has been raised with ministers, with council officials warning that buyers cannot make informed decisions when erosion risk is not clearly disclosed. While estate agents argue buyers must do their own due diligence, even they acknowledge the ethical grey area.

What is unfolding along the Norfolk coast - and elsewhere in East Anglia - is no longer a collection of one-off misfortunes but a failure of policy. Homes are having to be demolished before collapsing, graves are at risk and vulnerable land continues to be sold within the law, but against its spirit. With responsibility split between councils, agencies and central government, individuals are left to carry the cost. Until there is a national framework for compensation, disclosure and managed retreat, the advancing sea will continue to upend lives while decisions are delayed.

In January 2026, over 12,000 Australian motorists joined the electric vehicle ecosystem. Out of 87,092 light vehicles sold, 7,409 were battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 5,161 were plugin hybrids (PHEVs). That is a penetration rate of 16%. Not too shabby to start the year off. Remember that the penetration rate ... [continued]

Canon released its first PowerShot camera back in 1996 with a 0.5-megapixel sensor, helping kickstart the digital photo revolution. To celebrate that 30-year anniversary, the company has unveiled a Limited Edition version of its still-popular PowerShot G7 X III compact camera. It has a few unique touches but is otherwise the same as the original model released nearly seven years ago.

The limited edition model has a new "graphite" color with a knurled front ring designed to exude "luxury and quality," Canon wrote. It also carries 30 year anniversary logo printed on the body "to create a special feeling suitable for limited edition models," the company added in the most Canon-y way possible.

As a reminder, the G7 X III was one of the first cameras announced specifically as a model for vloggers, thanks to its ability to shoot vertical video for Instagram. It features a 20.1MP sensor, flip-up 3-inch touchscreen, 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens and a microphone input. It supports 4K 30 fps video with no cropping and can shoot 1080p at 120 fps. The piece de resistance is direct streaming to YouTube directly over Wi-Fi, then a new thing but now a common feature. It originally retailed for $749.

The G7 X III had been in short supply until recently, but used models became popular with influencers several years ago and started selling way above list price. Possibly because of that viral fame, Canon announced in August 2025 that it was increasing production and the G7 X III started returning to stock a few months later priced at $880.

The Limited Edition G7 X III is selling for a lot more than that at $1,299, though it does come with a limited edition Peak Design cuff wrist strap and 32GB SD card. If you want to one-up the influencers and grab one, shipping will start in April 2026.

Along with the camera, Canon announced a pair of interesting new RF-mount full-frame lenses. The first is the ultra wide angle RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM prime model priced at $2,599, promising bright, high quality optics. The other is a very interesting $1,899 RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM zoom lens with up to a 190 degree perspective at the widest setting.

Yamaha To Resume Testing At Sepang After Investigation

Yamaha is to continue testing on the final day of the Sepang MotoGP test. The Japanese factory halted all testing activity after Fabio Quartararo's bike had a technical problem in the late afternoon on the first day of the test, Yamahas seeing no track action on day 2. The decision was taken because they feared they could cause a dangerous situation for both their own riders and riders of other teams, Yamaha's technical director Max Bartolini explained on Wednesday.

The Baton Rouge Police Department announced recently that it will begin using a drone designed by military equipment manufacturer Lockheed Martin and Edge Autonomy, making it one of the first local police departments to use an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a history of primary use in foreign war zones. Baton Rouge is now one of the first local police departments in the United States to deploy an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with such extensive surveillance capabilities — a dangerous escalation in the militarization of local law enforcement.

This is a troubling development in an already long history of local law enforcement acquiring and utilizing military-grade surveillance equipment. It should be a cautionary tale that prods communities across the country to be proactive in ensuring that drones can only be acquired and used in ways that are well-documented, transparent, and subject to public feedback.

Baton Rouge bought the Stalker VXE30 from Edge Autonomy, which partners with Lockheed Martin and began operating under the brand Redwire last week. According to reporting from WBRZ ABC2 in Louisiana, the drone, training, and batteries, cost about $1 million.

Members of the Baton Rouge Police Department pose with a military-grade Stalker VXE30 droneBaton Rouge Police Department officers stand with the Stalker VXE30 drone in a photo shared by the BRPD via Facebook.

All of the regular concerns surrounding drones apply to this new one in use by Baton Rouge:

  • Drones can access and view spaces that are otherwise off-limits to law enforcement, including backyards, decks, and other areas of personal property.
  • Footage captured by camera-enabled drones may be stored and shared in ways that go far beyond the initial flight.
  • Additional camera-based surveillance can be installed on the drone, including automated license plate readers and the retroactive application of biometric analysis, such as face recognition.

However, the use of a military-grade drone hypercharges these concerns. Stalker VXE30's surveillance capabilities extend for dozens of miles, and it can fly faster and longer than standard police drones already in use.

"It can be miles away, but we can still have a camera looking at your face, so we can use it for surveillance operations," BRPD Police Chief TJ Morse told reporters.

Drone models similar to the Stalker VXE30 have been used in military operations around the world and are currently being used by the U.S. Army and other branches for long-range reconnaissance. Typically, police departments deploy drone models similar to those commercially available from companies like DJI, which until recently was the subject of a proposed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ban, or devices provided by police technology companies like Skydioin partnership with Axon and Flock Safety

Additionally troubling is the capacity to add additional equipment to these drones: so-called "payloads" that could include other types of surveillance equipment and even weapons.

The Baton Rouge community must put policies in place that restrict and provide oversight of any possible uses of this drone, as well as any potential additions law enforcement might make.

EFF has filed a public records request to learn more about the conditions of this acquisition and gaps in oversight policies. We've been tracking the expansion of police drone surveillance for years, and this acquisition represents a dangerous new frontier. We'll continue investigating and supporting communities fighting back against the militarization of local police and mass surveillance. To learn more about the surveillance technologies being used in your city, please check out the Atlas of Surveillance.
