Back in the day Winter Fuel Payment was a kludge designed to avoid an increase in the pension in a difficult budget in 1997 by Gordon Brown.

This suggests a very simple answer which is to abolish the WFP and increase the pension by the same amount. That just gets rid of the argument once and for all.

Of course it also increases the amount set by the triple lock so carries forward into the future.

Even when Labour realise they've made a mistake and chose to U-Turn, they still can't do it in a way that draws a line and closes the argument. With WFA, It's still "We intend to widen the eligibility and we'll announce details in the autumn." Maybe. This doesn't look like a U-Turn. It looks like a planted story to hide something else in the news cycle.

And yet again, Labour fail to deal with the political optics.
