That's twice in one day I've run it to one of those techno-cornucopians who think lab meat, vertical farming, 3D printers, robot serfs, GMOs, Tesla EVs, etc, etc, are going to save us all.

Is there something in the air?

But then last week I was reminded of a book I hadn't thought about in decades. Timothy Leary - Confessions of a Hope Fiend

Wondering how and if this rolls out to other major instances, eg mastodon.cloud.

@dredmorbius And we're still a long way from mature steady state here where end of life replacement is the dominant. Instead, we're in the accelerating deployment stage where deployment costs (human and monetary) dominate the perceived payback.

Yet another area where the vested-interest shill-bots are exhausting. Especially the pro-nuclear, anti-renewable crowd.

@dredmorbius Most excellent toot-storm. Re renewables human cost see

Renewables are different and the economics don't fit into systems built around fossil fuels. They tend to have high capital costs and very low running costs. So it is with the human costs as well. High installation employment, very low running employment.

@tbm You tell me ;)
Global extreme poverty fell and is falling dramatically. Both absolute numbers and as a percentage. This appears to have had a major phase change around 2000. Prior to that it was still rising and peaking.

https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty/

I suspect, but I'm not sure, that this is directly tied to China's growing economy and prosperity. A HUGE number of people there switched from rural subsistence farmers to urban workers.

The Renewables Jobs programme:

"Renewables have a large human cost per megawatt-hour of generation, so high the boosters of renewables actually boast about it with recent press reports about the millions of jobs wind and solar installations have brought to the US. That's a lot of paychecks to provide something like 6% of America's electricity demands."

Strewth. It's employment, but for low gain.

Yup, nothing much happened in the last 17 years. Except
- 9/11
- Iraq
- Afghanistan
- Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria,
- China's economy
- Accelerating wind/solar roll out
- All that internet stuff, Google, Facebook,
- Smartphones
- Palm oil
- SARS, Ebola, etc
And that's just the obvious big stuff. Climate Change was more incremental, driven by 370->410 CO2 ppm. All those hot years.

Incrementalism. 2000 was 17 years ago. 17 years ahead is approx half way from now to 2050. Why should 2035 be more different from now than 2000?

Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future. (Steve Miller)

We're not so much flying with the eagles, as re-arranging the deckchairs on the Hindenburg. Thing is, are we still over the Atlantic or are we coming in to land?
