Just a link really so I can go back and find it again in August come the first anniversary of the London Riots.
"The question on people's lips is 'why are these people rioting', but perhaps the question should be 'why wouldn't they'?" "Politicians can't see any political message to be drawn from the eruption into the public consciousness of thousands of people around the country with so little stake in society, so little to loose, so little to do with a long hot summer and no EMA, no spending money, no youth centres to do anything in that they're willing to risk jail time for the thrill of a firebomb and a new TV." http://dominjapanround4.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/atari-teenage-riot.html [from: Google Plus Public Activity Feed for Julian Bond] [ 26-Jun-12 8:41am ] 21 Jun 2012 Like-d for this piece of genius. It's World Gin Day tomorrow. http://www.facebook.com/GinDay
So I had to finish my bottle of No.171 Portobello Road today. All I can say is that it's a good honest drop of gin and makes a damn fine Martini. And at a very reasonable price as well. http://portobellostarbar.co.uk/portobelloroadgin/ Recommended. Next on the list (and ready for June 9) is a gift bottle of Greenall's Berkeley Square. Top 10 best (Wobble)Dubstep tracks of all time
http://earthexit.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/10-wobble-records.html Will (Wobble)Dubstep last longer than DnB and become more mainstream? It's now at least 7 years (maybe 10 depending on where you start) and counting. That's longer than most sub-genres in the Hardcore Continuum(c) survive. And I think it's safe to say that it's better known by more people than most of them. I still hate it though. It was hilarious for 5 minutes and then just stupid. (IMHO!) So, the wobble end of dubstep have won, at least in terms of popularity and overall influence, and despite all the right knowing people saying that it'll be over and forgotten in a few years. Now,... Shackleton - Music For The Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ EPs
It's time to dust off the IDM label. This is both clearly part of the dance music continuum and also clearly not for dancing to! Which is kind of where IDM sat. It really reminds me of people like Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble in the sense of producing experimental music but which is clearly informed by a more mainstream genre like Funk, Dub Reggae or Dance. It also highlights the current problem of trying to name, categorise and create boxes for (sub)bass-heavy musics particularly from the UK melting pot. "dowuhtulike - we'll name it later" is a valid response but it's a bit of a cop out so here's another take. There's DM (dance music), sometimes called IDM that is DM designed for listening to while doing something else. As opposed to DM that is designed to jack your body and that only really makes sense while played at high volume on a dance floor. The "intelligent" bit of IDM is a bit insulting because it suggests that there's Stupid Dance Music (SDM?) as well. Well there certainly are DMs that are stupid (psy-trance comes to mind!) but that's not the intention. AnyRoadUp, no matter what we decide to call it, Shackleton is pushing boundaries with some extraordinary sounds that are still accessible. Dig it out, listen to it, enjoy. RA gave it 4.5 out of 5 and IMHO that's deserved. http://thequietus.com/articles/08633-shackleton-quiet-hour-drawbar-organ-eps http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=10964 http://www.thisisourhouse.org/2012/05/reviews-shackleton-music-for-the-quiet-hourthe-drawbar-organ-e-ps-woe-to-the-septic-heart/ http://www.spin.com/blogs/genre-shall-not-be-named-dubstep OOF! Lone - Galaxy Garden
Somehow or other my music feeds dragged me towards Lone's (aka Matt Cutler) latest full length album "Galaxy Garden" that's just been released. RA gave it a 4/5 and xl8r and factmag reviews were appreciative. Check last.fm and Pitchfork (8.2) and it looks good enough for a listen and not obviously out of my taste range. http://www.xlr8r.com/reviews/lone/galaxy-garden http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=10913 http://www.factmag.com/2012/05/09/lone-galaxy-garden-2/ http://www.last.fm/music/Lone http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16578-galaxy-garden/ Lone - Crystal Caverns 1991 A quick rar download later (do your own google search!) and I find my self listening to something that is full of Arp synth stabs, neo-Bukem drum breaks and it has that MID-RANGE CLARITY and cleanliness that is like stabbing your eardrums with icicles. Then I noticed the reference in one of the reviews to Rustie and Glass Swords that made it into a lot of people's top 10 albums of 2011. http://thequietus.com/articles/07196-rustie-glass-swords-review Rustie - After Light I think I'm missing something here because I found that genuinely painful to listen to. Then I remembered that Reynolds (as usual) had nailed this at the end of last year in an article he did on Electronic Maximalism. http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/8721-maximal-nation/ This isn't the stripped down sub-bass and snare/handclap of dance, this is producers showing off with just how much of the kitchen sink they can throw into the mix and still keep control of it. With no vinyl hiss, muddy reverb, sample distortion or noise floor. This isn't about feeling the emotion, it's about thinking your way to IDM enlightenment. Now I generally love IDM but this is too cold for me. Lone Galaxy Garden. Words: Nathan Albert; Label: R&S; XLR8R Rating: 8/10. "I wanted everything to be as colourful as possible," said Lone (a.k.a. Matt Cutler) in a recent interview with ... [from: Google Plus Public Activity Feed for Julian Bond] [ 09-May-12 5:34pm ] |
