Must lurk moar, but in the mean time, I'm curious to know what the UK riots look like from the rest of the world and also what they look like from the Conservative heartland of the Home Counties. I feel like I'm seeing way too many people rushing to judgement, calling for what would effectively be vigilante justice, calling in the army or just "something should be done". It's certainly bringing all the nut jobs (both right and left wing) out of the woodwork in internet comments and twitter posts.

I am following the news about the UK riots and the only thing that goes through my mind is:

I just read this post on criticalmassfilm blog re. UK riots.
It is not short but it is a fine example of a thinking human putting his thoughts on paper (sic) and sharing with the rest of us.

Good one. Particularly struck by the comparison between us and afghanistan, goods vs chinese factory conditions, beer vs the grain exporting countries, and tescos vs the local grocer.

Last weekend's Guardian Weekend mag led with a picture of a Tesco Value beer bottle turned into petrol bomb about local communities vs the supermarket chains. A different subject but ironically prophetic. Wish I could find an image of the cover online.

It's a shame the piece is so impersonal; after all, the author (and I) are part of the equation. What is he (and I) to do? He leaves this unsaid, which is fine, it's perfectly reasonable not to know how to respond just yet. But it's a searing indictment and I'm understandably curious.

It is tough +Jake Sharman ... but I don't want the poor and marginalised to let "me get on with things", I'm uncomfortable with the implied misanthropy associated with that view. The thing that bends my noodle though is this: though I may feel that way, do my actions - however mundane they seem to me - actually reinforce the dystopian argument on offer in the article?
