Just realised he'll be in Fabric here in London tomorrow..

Fabric, eh? My kids go occasionally. Last time I was there was a First Tuesday event featuring Nick Denton talking about wonderful new thing called XML. So that must have been 1999.
It's a shame that the Last FM app can't stream for free anymore.. Are you on Spotify? Would subscribe to your playlist..

I guess it depends on where you are. I'm still using last.fm quite happily. Mostly I use a proxy running on the NAS, but I've just tried the desktop app and it's streaming happily. So is the web version. And I don't think I have a current sub. Maybe it's only the iphone app that's limited. Ah. Just tried the iPod Touch app and it only gave me a 50 track trial.
No, haven't got into Spotify. Maybe I should look again.
+Jaro O. Can't stream for free? The FAQ says if you live in the UK, US or Germany, Last.FM Radio streaming is free. It works fine for me over iphone & android. In fact one of the reasons I use Last.FM over Spotify is it's 'free-ness' :-)
I loved the early LastFM, but CBS butchered the UI esp. Android client repeadly, (haven't upgraded iPhone now..yet) will go have another look. Just got Spotify client 2 weeks ago in US. Haven't installed. Maybe today per this post. Thanks Julian.
Nicolas Jaar is cool. Yeah, Last.fm in the UK and USA is free to stream, however without a subscription you can only play certain on-demand tracks and only 30 times for each track (I believe). It's gone downhill recently now you can't play your own tag radio stations or loved tracks, plus the inclusion in in-stream adverts ala Spotify sucks. The price increase to £36 from £17 a year is a joke considering the service is not as good as it once was...still doesn't push me to use spotify though...completely irrational, but I don't like it and I don't know why...
@Alexander I agree about Spotify - two reasons for me - cost and poor platform support. Oh and a limited range of music, Last.FM still has it beat in that regard, though it does have limited tracks on it. It could be so much better with only a small effort... and some direction!
I've been using Spotify for ages, and love it, but it's not a music discovery service really, even though it comes handy, when you want to listen to random stuff, that somebody tells you about.. Laptop in repair, so I'm only mobile, and the Android app is streaming only 50 songs, and then you need to go for a subscription model.. Can't understand how it can still work for someone..
@Jaro) '...even though it comes handy, when you want to listen to random stuff, that somebody tells you about.' This I can understand, although in my experience it never has what I've been looking for (but then I guess my music taste doesn't put me in their pop-chart/radio demographic) I have found grooveshark to be better in that respect.
Grooveshark hasn't got the function to save offline playlists on your device.. Even if it's encrypted and can only be played by the Spotify app, it's great when traveling, in areas with poor coverage, and it saves you data..
+Jaro O. With all my music on a Classic 160, I don't have those data/coverage problems! The trouble is all my music no longer fits and Apple won't sell me a 240Gb Classic. And I still find myself wanting to hear something I haven't got.
Been down that route. Only works in the v5.5/video not the v6 because Apple used an unusual disk i/f in the v6. There is no 3rd party disk available with that i/f in >160Gb. And even if you fit a 240Gb disk there are limits in the software you'll probably hit. There's a guy in Edinburgh occasionally making 240Gb v5.5 from spares. He tells me you probably can't use all the space for music. I think the main limit is on space for metadata, but I can handle that because I routinely trim metadata to the bone. But there's also a maximum number of tracks limit in the software.
It's almost enough to make me start looking again for a pro-audio music player based on a 2.5" disk but I think iRiver and Archos (the most likely candidates) have dropped the ball as well.
Sales of the iPod Classic are dropping off. And people with this problem are a small minority so I can't see Apple doing it. It's completely possible that V6 is the last rev ever of the Classic and it might even get dropped completely. So working old ones are going to become gold dust on eBay.
If you like Jaar, I can recommend Ambient Dub tag radio on last.fm

I was also an early contributor to "chillosophy"

Its not quite 240gb, but 220gb isn't too shabby and will fit in a classic.
