a little red dot shows up on the app store icon with the number of updates that there are, you can choose either to "update all" or touch each app's update info (all in the same place) and choose which you wish to update. or you can look at all the specific update infos and then still choose update all.
Personally I would be very very very pissed off if Apple decided to update my apps
autonomously, without my sayso !

David, on the other hand I am happy to allow automatic updates without my say so. There should be an option to allow this.
I just find it an irritation to be constantly having to allow.
