What's the best upgrade for an iPod Classic 160 that is out of space? Quora question here http://qr.ae/4vPj I have an iPod 6G 160GB that is now full of music and has < 1Gb of space left. I've become used to the simplicity of syncing the whole collection and having it always available. One possible upgrade option is to find a video or 5.5G iPod and upgrade it with the only available disk to 240GB. The disks are the same price as new 160Gb iPod. However, I'm told the iPod OS and available RAM means that I'm close to the limit of how many tracks can be accepted. Even if I fit more storage, the OS will fail somewhere between 160Gb and 240Gb of used space and refuse to startup. As far as I can tell, none of the personal music player manufacturers are addressing the needs of people with very large collections. There are no PMPs using 2.5 inch disks and none available off the shelf using >160Gb 1.8 inch disks. There's the added complication that although 240Gb disks are available, Apple changed the interface with the 6G and nobody makes a 240Gb disk with this interface. AFAIK. I'm left with few options, segment the collection and keep the latest, more interesting stuff < 160Gb. Use iTunes or Winamp to auto-fill, and/or duct tape two iPods together. All of these suck compared with my current approach.

Varun Giridhara My preferred encoding is LAME alt-presetstandard. This is 192Kb VBR and to my ears indistinguishable from lossless. Unfortunately there's a trend now, especially with limited outlet new music like dubstep to release as 320Kb MP3. It's not really worth re-encoding this for a bit more space and these are a pretty small proportion of the library.

I'm now up to 22328 tracks so there's not much room for better compression.

Just discovered another gotcha. The iPod OS can only support 32k songs. This is as well as a 64Mb limit on the itunesdb file size that you may be able to get round by using gnupod or similar to remove unnecessary metadata. 1 Feb 2011 1 Feb 2011
