If there's one thing I've learnt from all this, it's to phone 999 as soon as you see something bad happening. Fire service for unattended and dangerous fires. Police for obviously illegal activity, especially dumping waste. The councils and agencies need to know but often they are slow to act and have hands that are tied. Everybody with any link to the area knows about the problem but nobody can do anything. Hertford CC (landfill management), Broxbourne BC (Planning and Enforcement, multiple site visits), Cadent (Gas pipeline, multiple site visits), Environment Agency (landfill management and licenses, one site visit), HCC and BBC councillors for the ward or with an interest (one site visit), Broxbourne and Herts & Storts MPs (Lewis Cocking, Josh Dean), Hoddesdon Fire Service and Watch Commander (2 fires).

The fly-tipping continues to get worse. For the last month there's been small amounts of smoke appearing out of holes in the ground suggesting that the buried domestic waste is still smouldering away. Broxbourne Council enforcement are doing the best they can but it's hard. Not helped because the current registered landowner claims to have already sold the land on so it's not their problem. The fly-tip is on private land so councils don't have responsibility to deal with it.

Then it began to get really bad. in Oct 2025, lorries started coming in with industrial quantities of shredded domestic waste. They filled the canyon above the gas line and then covered it over with soil. Broxbourne Council issued an official stop notice in Dec but by that time, they'd actually finished burying the waste and had left.

Then in 2023, the field was sold on and the problems started. Fly-tipped domestic waste and stable waste started to accumulate in one corner. Old cars, quads, storage containers, gas canisters appeared. The fly-tipped waste started blowing into neighbouring SSSI woods and fields. In July 2025, there was a huge fire that needed 3 fire engines and a water tanker one night when all the rubbish, wood chip and stable waste caught fire. You could see the fire from Ware!

There's a field near Cock Lane. In 2018, the long time landowner got planning permission to clear and landscape the field with engineering rubble and topsoil. For 3 years we had clanking diggers and lorries delivering the rubble and soil and then spreading it. There's a Cadent High pressure gas line across the field, so they left a canyon above the line to avoid disturbing it. You may not like all this but it was all above board and done by the book.

Landfill waste in Broxbourne There were 10,238 reports of suspected waste crime in England in 2025. In Broxbourne we get our fair share of fly-tipping, but with all the landfill sites, you might be surprised to find we also have the unlicensed burying of industrial quantities of domestic waste.

Latest fly-tip spotted just off the road in Broxbourne Woods. A pallet load of ~3,500 white eggs. 44 boxes, each containing 6 trays of 66 eggs. It does make you wonder. Food for foxes, hedgehogs and magpies?

For a couple of months now MS Windows 10 has been failing updates. Despite endless yak shaving, I couldn't fix it. Today it decided to redo Windows 10, version 22H2. I took a long time but did complete. Fingers crossed, it's sorted itself out.

Prolonged drought is destroying Eastern Europe farmed fish production. Judging by the bites on my legs, Harvest Mite season has begun in the woods. Usually it's late July, but I guess the drought kept them dormant. A little bit of rain and they've all come out to play. Same as for ticks. Loose clothing tucked in. Hot shower when you get home. And some Anthesan when the itchy bites appear 2 days later.
